A Great Place For A Nice, Peaceful Vacation Time
My son and I arrived around noon on Oct. 27th. We were both impressed upon entering Fries, even more when we arrived at River Mist Retreat. It’s both beautiful and spacious. My daughter and son-in-law arrived soon after with their three girls, ages six, two, and six months. We sat around the campfire Friday night and had a great time. Saturday was gloomy and rainy and we went out and about Galax. Our only regret is that we didn’t book more time to stay. Thanks for a great place for a nice, peaceful vacation time.

Very Clean And Well Appointed
Thank you for allowing us to stay at your riverfront cabin. It was a great home base for exploring the area and searching for property. We visited Independence, Galax, Fries, Floyd & Mouth of Wilson and discovered how beautiful this area is. Thanks for being pet friendly as our dogs enjoyed exploring & nights by the fire pit. We even saw a deer swim by. We’ve stayed at many cabins and yours is very clean and well appointed. Thanks also for the goodie bag you left for us.

A Wonderful, Peaceful, Place For Our Family To Relax
Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful, peaceful, place for our family to relax! We fished (my son caught 4), laid in the hammocks, cooked foil packs on the fire, and so enjoyed the dessert you supplied! We haven’t had s’mores in years! Also having a table to accommodate all of us was a joy! We rarely get to have both kids, their spouses, and my grandson all together for a meal and conversation. We are already hoping to come back soon! Lots more to explore and enjoy! Thanks!

Thank You For Sharing Your Beautiful Home
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. We found everything we needed or wanted and realized we had over packed. This was a perfect location for horseback riding and a visit to Mt. Airy (Mayberry), NC. The weather was not always perfect, but afforded us the exact relaxing type of vacation we needed. Enjoyed fishing in the river — didn’t catch anything though. (haha – can you stock the river next time?) Thanks again!

River Mist Retreat Is The Perfect Place For Us
Thank you for sharing your home with us. We’re two friends who met in graduate school. Our daughters and sons are the same ages and we’ve been meeting for “Pen Pal Camp” for the past eleven years. River Mist Retreat is the perfect place for us! We had fun searching for the mythical alpaca farm in pea soup fog, combing through antique stores in Galax, having dinner together at your table, and surviving an epic tubing adventure that was supposed to be 2 hours and ended up 6! Sometimes even the New River runs slow!! Many thanks!

The Ultimate Relaxing Retreat
This was our first stay at River Mist Retreat. It was our largest blessing so far this year. The home is equipped with everything we wanted as well as everything we needed both physically and mentally. The great care you put into providing the ultimate relaxing retreat shows in every corner you turn in the home and on the property. While I enjoyed relaxing in the hammock with a book and a glass of wine, my husband was losing count of how many fish he caught. Apparently there are several varieties of fish to be caught, including large and small mouth bass, crappie, and other pan fish. Needless to say, both of us enjoyed our stay!

Our Group Was Very Pleased
This was our first stay at River Mist Retreat. Our annual trip to Galax for the 82nd Old Fiddler’s Convention looked in jeopardy when our usual accommodations were double booked. But it worked out to stay at River Mist and we’re thrilled it did…this place is great. We arrived on a Thursday from Hillsborough, Efland, Mebane, & Raleigh, NC. Spent Friday and Saturday on the river fishing and playing poker with the guys in the evening on the great outdoor side porch area. Our group was very pleased with the accommodations and enjoyed the extras like the foosball table and the well supplied kitchen. We really appreciate the reservation of your place and hope this can become our annual stay for future trips. Thanks for everything!

Had A Great Time At The River Mist!
We had a great time at the River Mist! Everyone enjoyed going out on the river to kayak and fish (while I enjoyed the peace and quiet relaxing by the river!) We got to see river otters, deer, a bear swimming across the river, and so many birds! Thank you for a nice relaxing place to stay! Also thank you so much for the s’mores gift and for contacting me to make sure everything was good!

A Special Property
We have really enjoyed our stay at River Mist Retreat. We spent a lot of time kayaking on this amazing river and biked on the trail. My 9 year old was overjoyed to eat s’mores every evening. We really enjoyed the beer and pizza at Creek Bottom Brewery in Galax and got some amazing produce at the Southwest Virginia Farmer’s Market in Hillsville. We had a very nice experience at the bike shop in Galax where we went to get a punctured tire repaired. Very friendly local people and quite a special property you have! Thank you!

A Fantastic Week At River Mist Retreat!
We had a fantastic week at River Mist Retreat! The setting is perfect – so peaceful and quiet. Great to spend quality time with family without all the “noise” of normal life! We brought our own kayak and rubber boats, so spent a lot of time on the river. We did the tube float with New River Outdoor Adventures and we went up to ride horses at Appalachian Horseback Riding Adventures–Doug Cregger was great! We also ventured up to the animal park at Fort Chiswell–what a great experience! Overall, couldn’t have asked for any better!!

Our Third Visit
This was our 3rd year at River Mist Retreat and once again we had a great time! We recently bought our own canoe so this year was spent on the river. My husband and son went out on the canoe everyday and I enjoyed the house and hammocks while they were gone. On our last day, my husband went canoeing by himself and came back very excited telling us about the two bears he had seen on the shoreline. Fish were caught everyday, but my husband is still looking for the “BIG” one. So I guess I know what we’ll be doing next year. The weather was great–not too hot–sunny with just a couple of quick rain showers. Timmy Dixon at New River Outdoor Adventures was able to take us and our canoe to other boat landings so we could enjoy the other parts of the river. See ya next year!

A Wonderful Stay At River Mist
We had a wonderful stay at River Mist. It was very clean and had everything we needed. It provided us with a peaceful, joyful place to enjoy family and nature. The grandparents and grandkids enjoyed badminton, exploring the creek, the playhouses, and nightly s’mores by the fire. Memories were made for all. We also saw a black bear while riding on the New River Trail! What a surprise! Our visit to the Blue Ridge Music Center (20 – 30 minutes from River Mist) was well worth it. A nice easy hike, interesting museum, and Appalachian music. Thank you for sharing this place. We look forward to coming back.

Had a Wonderful Vacation at River Mist Retreat!
We had a wonderful vacation at the The River Mist Retreat! We try to stay at a different mountain cabin every year…this is the only one we want to go back to now! The cabin had everything we needed and much more. It was very clean and well-maintained. We couldn’t stop watching the river…and the nature all around. The weather was perfect, and the fishing was great. The kids loved the playhouses and playing badminton, volleyball, and fooseball. They loved watching the fireflies, chipmunks, and deer. Such a perfect place. Hoping to return very soon!

A Pleasure To Stay At This Wonderful Home!
It was truly a pleasure to stay at this wonderful home! With the river only steps away and the dock to fish off of it was perfect for us. It was very easy to launch and dock our kayak and a pleasure to s’more out in the evenings!
We played badminton till our arms and legs were tired then got in the creek to cool off.
The home itself was very clean and comfortable with everything needed to prepare wonderful meals to eat on the covered deck/ summer kitchen.
Would highly recommended to anyone!!

A Beautiful Location!
We took a chance on trying a new place in a new location and it turned out to be the best place we have stayed in the last 12 years. The house is very cozy and and the views were wonderful. We celebrated our daughters 12th birthday here and it was perfect for her. We were able to fish and explore and do thinks she loves. The house was very clean and well prepared for people coming who may have traveled light. Anything we needed was available. I highly recommend this place. If you’re looking for a place and you’re stuck between trying to decide between this place or another. I would choose this place. We will be coming back as soon as we can! The owners of the place were very kind and genuine : -)

Great Place to Enjoy The Best of the Region
Shannon really wants you to enjoy your stay at River Mist Retreat, and that is apparent from the welcome phone call, gift of s’more ingredients that encourage you to use the fire pit, and the well-supplied and equipped house. The setting is magnificent and very private, yet very close to the town of Fries. There really was river mist our first morning we were there, providing some dramatic photo opportunities. We especially enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks. Our dog Ruby was in heaven, immediately jumping into the river for a swim upon our arrival and enjoying all kinds of interesting smells on the banks and in the woods.

My husband & I both loved River Mist! We got exactly what we were looking for…space, quiet, fishing & a place to freely walk our dogs. We will be repeat guests. I highly recommend this location for those who are seeking a clean, safe retreat. When I walked in, the house felt homey, even including a photograph of the owners on the bedroom dresser. I felt like I was in a home, not a box-type rental house. The owner, Shannon, even called to make sure we arrived safely and even left us a welcome gift. And the place was absolutely spotless! I cannot handle bugs, and it seems obvious that the owners take the proper steps to ensure a pest-free environment. Additionally, the kitchen is well stocked, and linens and towels were abundantly available. You will not be disappointed during your stay at River Mist! Thank you, Shannon! Peace & Blessings

Perfect Vacation Spot!
This was absolutely the best vacation my family has taken in a long time. The house was very well equipped. We were happy simply spending time by the campfire and fishing – no need to even leave the house. It was so peaceful and quiet and our dogs loved it as well. The owners let us know they were just a phone call away, should we need anything. We did attend the Hillsville Flea Market/Gun Show while we were there and it was quite an experience. The first day, we walked 6.92 miles checking out all the vendors. We would highly recommend River Mist Retreat as a vacation spot for both young and old.

My family spent a week at River Mist Retreat and we enjoyed it so much! Even though it rained quite a bit while we were there, we still had a great time. We swam, did some fishing and tubing, made s’mores and camp pies at the firepit, and just enjoyed our downtime from our busy lives in the Washington, DC area. We made a couple of trips into Galax to eat and go to the movies. There was a bowling alley we intended to try, but didn’t make it. We found the house to be just as advertised. It’s a very nice place with everything you’ll need in the kitchen. Beds were comfortable. The master is very roomy with a great closet! We had no problems at all during our stay, but I reached out to Shannon once with a question, and she responded very quickly. We’re planning to book again next year and will try some other adventures (zip lining, kayaking, etc). I highly recommend River Mist Retreat!

A Wonderful Place To Visit
My wife, son and I rented the home for 4 days last week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We kayak fish and the home is located right on the New River with easy access to the water. We kayaked from the house and paddled a mile to the first set of rapids with no issues. The fishing was very good with several 15-17″ smallmouth bass, one right off the dock on our last morning. The customer service by the owner was exceptional with great communication. The home offers much for relaxing on the river bank in chairs or a hammock. Also the home is very well equipped with all you need to cook or grill. Many outdoor options are nearby including the New River Trail which is beautiful. We have stayed in several places in the Blue Ridge but this one is a favorite. Will be back during football to see the Hokies!!

Fabulous Family Reunion
We had a rare opportunity to assemble our four children -two adults with their own partners and two younger kids – in one place for a much needed vacation. This river house was the perfect place for all of us, and a toy poodle, to enjoy kayaking, swimming, bonfires, steaks on the grill, gorgeous balcony views, chill time in the games or TV room, antiquing in nearby Galax, or petting alpacas at a local farm. The house is generously provisioned with the kitchenware, appliances and miscellanea a whole family needs to be comfortable and relax. And there’s plenty of room inside and outside for everyone to find privacy if desired. An unexpected bonus was seeing an otter while we explored the area streams in our rented kayaks. We stayed for four nights, all of us had a great time, and plan to visit again next year., VA)

Peaceful, Fun, and Wonderful Vacation
We are a family with 2 parents, a grandma, 2 kids (7&9), and 2 dogs who spent a week at the River Mist Retreat this summer. Shannon, the owner, takes great pride in making sure that her guests are well taken care of. Everything we could have possibly wanted was right here for us. The house was clean and comfortable with a quirky layout that added to the whimsy of our week. The property is tucked back into the trees and has so much to do it seemed like a different vacation spot everyday. We spent hours fishing on the river and hot afternoons playing in the shade of the stream. We were able to let the dogs run free and explore. Is was a peaceful, fun, and wonderful vacation. We had the best time and plan to return again next summer.
Romantic Valentine’s Weekend Getaway Spot
My husband and I just spent Valentine’s weekend at River Mist Retreat and we couldn’t be more pleased. The owners were very helpful and even called after our arrival to make sure we were finding everything ok. We found the home to be extremely clean and well maintained. It is stocked with everything you could possibly want, including wood for the fire pit which was a huge plus. We especially enjoyed the privacy and the beautiful views of the river. We will definitely recommend this property to family and friends.

My wife and I were looking for a nice, secluded home to celebrate our anniversary and River Mist Retreat fit the bill perfectly. The home is beautiful, clean, well maintained, with a well-stocked kitchen, linens, towels and a lot of nice personal touches. We especially enjoyed having our morning coffee in the rockers on the front porch with the view of the river. It was also great to find such a wonderful home that was pet friendly. Our dog enjoyed exploring the property and joining us for walks on the New River Trail. The owners were very easy to work with, super helpful, and friendly. Thanks for the wonderful experience! We plan to return next summer for a week-long stay.

Total Relaxation (and a terrific bike ride)
My wife & I had to leave our home for 5 days while our hardwood floors were refinished. Because we had to take our two dogs with us, a hotel was out of the question. Shannon accepted us with our Border Collie and Miniature Dachsund and we couldn’t be more delighted. We enjoyed relaxing hours sitting by the New River just below the house, snoozing in the hammock, while our dogs played on the lawn or soaked up the sun. The house was spacious and very well equipped, and we took advantage of the BBQ on the deck and the horseshoe pit nearby. We also enjoyed lengthy bike rides on the nearby New River bike trail (57 miles, completely level — just our speed). Shannon called twice just to make sure everything was in order (it was!). We definitely plan to return to River Mist Retreat next year!

A Slice of Heaven!
The River Mist Retreat was amazing! My husband and myself, mother, and family friend spent the week in this immaculate home for a much needed vacation and we were not disappointed! From sunrise coffee on the balcony overlooking the river to the lazy afternoons reading in the hammock to the well stocked “double” kitchen to the plush beds we can’t say enough about this place! Shannon is an AMAZING host and soooo nice! This is the first vacation we have taken EVER where we were content going absolutely nowhere except grocery shopping and hitting a couple specialty shops in Galax! We spent our week napping, eating, grilling, making s’mores around the firepit, talking, laughing, playing cards and walking down the lane to the creek, where we “swam” and enjoyed wild blackberries. There really is no need to plan outings here. The outings we had planned we scrapped! This was our most relaxing vacation to date! We highly recommend the creek for cooling off (which I NEVER wanted to leave) and The Cafe for the best breakfast in Fries!!! Thanks to Shannon and Scott for their hospitality and entrusting us with their beautiful home💜

Serenity By The River
My daughter and two children( 3 and 20 months) and myself had a wonderful weekend. It was so beautiful and serene. My grandson and I built a fire and we all roasted marshmallows. We all walked to the playhouses and enjoyed watching the children play while my daughter and I sat in the swing and watched them. Loved the house with all the amenities. The owner Shannon was such a sweetheart. Made sure we had everything we needed. I will definitely be back. Loved our stay!

We’ll Be Back!
Myself and 4 highschool friends made River Mist Retreat our 30 year get-a-away. The drive to the property was beautiful, Christmas tree farms, the winding river/creek beds, farms. We had a wonderful time catching up. The setting is beautiful. The home is spacious and well stocked. We brought all our food, as we didn’t anticipate leaving. It snowed on Friday night, but the outside firepit and the indoor gas fireplace kept us toasty. Saturday night I had to open the veranda door in the master suite to feel the cool mountain air. I plan to bring the hubby, dog and 2 teenagers to play in the water this summer. Thank you Paynes, your hospitality was amazing.

Love this place!
My husband, our two dogs and I stayed here for three nights. It’s a clean, lovely home tucked away with a beautiful view of the New River. There is plenty of nearby hiking- Mount Rodgers the highest mountain in VA is about an hour away. We hope to go back when the water temperatures will be more welcoming. If you have small kids or dogs just be mindful there is a spiral staircase (we used our cooler to keep our dogs from going down it). The foosball table made for some great entertainment : -)

It is hard to decide whether I am more impressed with the property or the wonderful service from the owner. Everthing was fantastic! The pictures don’t do the property justice! From the privacy to the scenery and even the homey touches in the cabin… we were all just swept off our feet by the River Mist Retreat. My group of 5 slept comfortably in the cabin where we had plenty of towels and kitchen items readily available, not to mention an excellent set up for cooking indoors our out with the propane grill (we used it many times with tasty results) There was wood already chopped for fires and a lauch ramp for the rafts we took out in the river every day of our vacation. A nap in the hammock will make you rethink going home at the end of it all. The town was fun to explore and the state park is close by. We even played horseshoes and hiked the creek that runs through the property. I could go on and on about River Mist and the family’s incredible hospitality, but I will simply advise that you make this your vacation selection. I could not have been more satisfied with the booking or our decision to stay in the wonderful town of Fries! Thank you Shannon and family for sharing your retreat!

My boyfriend, myself and our dog stayed at River Mist Retreat for a week in August. First let me say Shannon the owner was a pleasure talking too. I would highly recommend this house for a very relaxing, fun get away. We loved our mornings on the porch reading and enjoying the river. We fished, (didn’t have any luck) but we still tried. Especially loved the huge hammocks. Our dog loved here daily walks on the property and swimming in the river. We saw lots of deer on the other side of the river every evening and had a campfire at night. We did venture out and go to an alpaca farm and a few wineries. There is a winery close by in Galax (Mt. Vale Vineyards) which was very nice and the owners very friendly. It was was just the 3 of us but this lovely home is big enough for the whole gang and has lots of different games. Can’t go wrong renting this property.

The owner (Shannon) is wonderful. She answered all our questions and was so helpful with a list of things to do and places to eat in the area. The property is amazing. It is truly secluded. We hiked on the New River Trail, spent some time Antiquing in Galax, and exploring the property. The best part of our vacation was just relaxing and enjoying time with friends by the river. The house is really well stocked with things that you may need. We would definitely stay here again.

Relaxing on the New River
First let me say that Shannon (owner) was the perfect host. She answered our questions prior to arrival and provided us with insider info on things to see and visit. The cabin sits right on the river, maybe 50 feet from the rivers edge. We spent a lot of time in the backyard by the fire pit and enjoying the beautiful weather. The rental was exactly as advertised—everything one would need was in the kitchen and more. The master bedroom had a balcony, so you could enjoy the morning sunrise and mist on the river while you had your coffee. We kayaked both above and below the rental which was nice. The river level was a little low and the water was clear. The river otters put on a show for us every day we spent on the river. Our pets loved the property, especially the river activity. We liked the privacy, yet closeness of the towns of Fries and Galax. This was our first trip to the Virginia mountains and we definitely will return. Thanks Shannon

A Quiet Respite
Imagine looking out over a smooth river with no sounds but birds and insects. You can’t hear cars or people…well, okay, a fisherman boats by once a day. My 2 dogs loved the river and exploring the property–it was far away from the road and safe for them, which I appreciated. The hammocks are the best part. Sit back, pick up a magazine, and enjoy the stillness 🙂

Beautifully Situated Getaway; Wonderful for Kids
My husband and our young child stayed here during the Galax Fiddlers Convention in mid-August. We were excited to find such a lovingly put together home– the kitchen is wonderfully stocked with quality equipment, the gas grill is top-of-the line, and all the furniture is just downright comfortable– down to the quality mattresses and family-style dining table. Our three year-old loved the play houses (which was also, amazingly, well stocked with play furniture). We loved the area as well. The house is just a short 1-2 minute drive from the New River Trail, which has wonderful offroad biking and hiking. We fished from the yard, found great quiet jogging roads a block or two away, and were just a short drive from the Galax Fiddlers Convention festivities. You can’t go wrong staying here.

Great Retreat By The River
House was exactly as described and pictured. Property was clean and well-prepared. Great location right on the river, and yet very private. Great access to New River Trail State park, river outfitters, Grayson Highlands Park, and Galax. Loved the kitchen – well stocked and easy for a group to work in as it is long with good prep and clean areas. Owners were very responsive to suggestions for river outfitters and other things to do. Even called to check in on us during our stay. Using the outdoor hammocks and fire pit are a must! Love the fog in the mornings (just like the pictures) and must be beautiful in the fall colors. Configuration is good for a couple’s get away, a family, or a larger group retreat. We look forward to using it again!

We had a wonderful vacation. The house and the view were perfect. We enjoyed all of the games on the property–badminton, horse shoes, volleyball and the board games. The fire pit at night was perfect for roasting marshmallows. We rented a canoe from Riverside Outfitters for the week. It was perfect floating around here and then we did an 8 ½ mile float from 58 to Riverside–tons of fun and beautiful view. One afternoon, we drove down to NC and visited Shelton Vineyards and Harvest Grill for dinner. Beautiful. Our favorite was sitting on the deck enjoying a drink listening to music and watching the people pass by on boats. Your place is lovely. We hope to come back soon.

Solace on the New River
My wife and I stayed here for the Memorial Day Weekend with the hopes of enjoying the area and recharging our batteries. Mission accomplished! The home is comfortable and well stocked with everything you need for your visit. We found the house and grounds clean and the owners available via phone for area info if needed. This house is well sized for a couple or a family and there is something to do for everyone. Games, books and satellite TV are supplied but we were outside most of the time. Unlike some rentals, the property is private and secluded. We enjoyed bicycling on the 39 mile New River Trail, and canoeing on the New River but our best moment was probably reading by the river in the hammocks. Fries (say it Freeze) is a town that time has forgotten and for so many reasons it is worth seeing. Fries is full of railroad, manufacturing/industrial and musical history. The town has a delicious Southwestern restaurant and Galax is close by if you want variety.

Our Mini Vacation In Fries, VA
My husband, my 10 yr old and her best friend and I vacationed at River Mist Retreat. It was a wonderful 4 days of relaxation and fun. There are plenty of things to do in the area, or for that matter, at the house! The house sits just a few yards from the New River. The children were enthralled with the two playhouses on the property. Special touches were evident, a small couch in one of the houses, flowers in the flower boxes and both were situated near the lovely creek on the property. Many toys were around both of the playhouses.
The main house was full of extra touches- the master was done tastefully in white, black and lavender. It has a large sliding glass door and screen with a small balcony for early morning coffee. There is also a smaller bedroom on the main floor. The lower floor is especially geared towards children with several couches, a double bed and many books and games. The main level has a large area with a mega table for family meals and times. The kitchen was well-equipped with everything including a dishwasher. The utility room had a washer and dryer.
The best part of the property is the peacefulness and tranquility. The back yard is the perfect place for reading a book in the hammocks,. meals at the picnic table, roasting smores in the fire pit or just casting from the water’s edge. The house also has an outdoor room with a gas grill, outdoor furniture and awesome views. We will definitely be back with our college age kids. There is a volleyball court, the New River Trail, fishing in a plethora of places, tubing, kayaking and attending one of Grayson County’s blue grass festivals or jams. This property has a little bit of peace that every age needs.

Perfect Spot For Our Family Vacation
This was a perfect spot for our family vacation this year. Our ten and eleven year old had a great time fishing from the riverbank, as well as, playing in the creek. Nearby we found tube and kayak rental, as well as, great bike riding on the New River Trail. In the nearby town of Galax we checked out some unique shops and enjoyed The Smokehouse restaurant so much we ate there three times. It was a really nice vacation!

Can’t Wait To Return
Choosing the perfect location for my very active father’s 80th birthday celebration was very important and River Mist Retreat was perfect! Harrison graciously greeted my father and brothers upon their arrival and treated them as if family! The bicycle riders were able to easily access the New River Trail approximately 1 mile away. The fisherman among us was able to fish to his heart’s content in the shade on the banks of the New River, stone’s throw away from this unique home. Those who didn’t bike or fish played horseshoes or relaxed in one of the hammocks beside the river. All my family members kept commenting that it was the perfect house! A very enjoyable experience for my father was cooking and eating breakfast in the outdoor kitchen on the top level of the home, overlooking the early morning river views. This is a fabulous home and we can’t wait to return!

Highly Recommend This Location
We spent 5 nights here at the Misty River Retreat and found it to be very relaxing. Actually we hardly left the house because most everything we wanted to do was right here! We could fish in the river, play in the creek, play volleyball, lay on the hammocks, read a book, roast marshmallows in the campfire… the list goes on. The kids had fun especially playing in the creek and playhouses or simply just scavenging for worms. The location is perfect because you are far away from the busy world, but close enough so that you can get to the grocery store in 15-20 min. On top of all these things, the owner was very helpful and easy to work with. I highly recommend this location for your next vacation!

Labor Day Weekend Reunion
We had our Labor Day weekend at the River Mist Retreat. This place was by far one of the nicest rental properties I have rented. Our daughter and family live in FL and we live in PA. Fries, Galax area was halfway. When we found out it was available we were so excited to have this be our meeting place. We were greeted by the owners parents who showed us around, and made us feel welcome. The place was very clean and full of amenities that we could use. Even a pizza oven that next time we will take advantage of. We loved cooking on the grill in the summer kitchen, it is a great gathering place after a long day of making memories and fishing. My grandkids had so much fun.. loved the river and all the toys and playhouses. And we celebrated our grandsons birthday on Sunday night after baking his cake that day. Our weekend was outstanding and I think part of it had to do with your beautiful home. Thanks again for all the hospitality and use of your home.

Had A Great Time
Our family had a great time at River Mist Retreat! The house was very clean and well-stocked with everything you might need. Even though we needed to dodge some raindrops, we had a great time kayaking, biking, swimming, floating, fishing and playing volleyball. Wish we could have stayed longer. It is in a great location for exploring the New River, area, yet very private and relaxing. Shannon and her family were very accommodating.

Great for fishing
My husband, son, daughter-in-law, and I just spent a week at River Mist Retreat and had a wonderful time. The house and property were exactly as described by the owner. Being met on our arrival by Harrison and Linda made us feel very welcomed. They are an extremely nice and helpful couple who went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed. We caught fish every day we were here and were able to have fresh fish for supper 3 nights of our stay. The suggestions for recreation and dining were extremely helpful. We ate at the Galax Smokehouse and will dine there again if we are in the area. I strongly recommend this rental for any one who loves nature, fishing, floating, and privacy.

I had looked at several vacation rentals before deciding on which one would best suit our needs. I wanted to spend a few days with my cousins, my brother, and our families after our family reunion, so we needed plenty of space. Living in different states, CO, VA, & WVA, we rarely see each other. Privacy was another concern because I knew that some of us would want to stay up late to catch up without disturbing anyone. River Mist Retreat offered both and so much more.
When I was ready to make the reservation, I called Shannon and asked several questions. She answered all of them and sent even more information by email. She was so helpful and friendly over the phone I felt that this was the right place for us. We had a bit of a drive from where we were, so I knew it might be late when we got there. The owners said that this wasn’t a problem, all we needed to do is call them an hour before we arrive and they would meet us there. When we arrived, Harrison and Linda welcomed us and gave me a short tour around the house to let us know where everything was. They are such a delightful couple and so accommodating.
This unique property is clean and well kept. My favorite part of the house is the front deck. The table was large enough to seat all of us comfortably. There’s a nice gas grill, a countertop space with decorative lighting, and a little bell to ring at the top of the stairs leading down to the backyard to let everyone know when it’s time to eat. Because we arrived at night, we hadn’t yet seen the view of the river. When we woke up the next morning, we were pleasantly surprised. We gravitated toward the deck to enjoy coffee before breakfast. The cool, but gentle mountain breeze blending with the aroma of fresh brewed coffee seemed to enhance its flavor.
Sun rise was like a stage curtain that gradually opened to reveal the first act of the day, a stunning view of nature. The calm of the river reflected its surroundings and echoed the movements of wildlife along its banks. These sights and sounds of nature were awesomely entertaining.
Thank you Payne family for sharing this wonderful property that appears to match who you are. This pleasurable experience with my family has brought us closer and will be a treasured memory from now on.

River Mist Retreat was Peaceful and Immaculate
We spent 2 nights with our teenagers and had a wonderful time. We grilled dinner and then relaxed by the fire outside. We loved watching the many different birds and my son even saw a deer! The house is huge and very comfortable and immaculatly clean. Very good location to experience total privacy and yet very near shops and towns. Thank-you for a wonderful weekend!

This Is The Place For You
Some friends and myself ( 8 of us in all), spent two nights and three days in this lovely home. We had an amazing time. The house was well equipped with everything we needed, in fact we cooked all of our meals in house. The view of the river was beautiful and most of our time was spent either swimming (although it was a bit cold), reading by the lake, or just relaxing in the sun. If you want to get away and just be surrounded by the peace and tranquility of nature, this is the place for you.

A Fun Time Was Had by All
We spent a 4-day weekend at River Mist Retreat and found the house extremely clean and the view of the river absolutely calming. We opened the balcony door at night and listened to the sound of silence. It was refreshing. It rained one day while we were there but we found it quite tranquil to just laze in the house and read books (there are plenty downstairs) or chat with each other. What a nice getaway.
